Cowgate and Blair Street Renovation

Cowgate, running parallel to the Royal Mile in the heart of Edinburgh has, for many years, been home to many alternative clubs, bars and hostels attracting thousands of revellers every week (and the associated problems of graffiti, grime, litter and anti social behaviour).

CCP were aware of this problematic site, on the corner of Cowgate and Blair Street, opposite a brand new hotel and retail complex and drew up a proposal to refresh and maintain the site, while accommodating a Council request for preventative measures for the dropping of litter in an adjacent fire exit stairwell.

The Cowgate facing wall was enhanced using a combination of advertising frames, printed and laminated Sideways Glance panels, along with colour complimenting painting. The fire exit stairwell was protected with a unique and bespoke built frame and mesh system that looks attractive, is highly effective and enables easy collection of detritus disposed irresponsibly by the public.

The end result has seen a dramatic improvement in the visual amenity of the area and a dramatic drop in the incidences of rubbish and graffiti here along with other benefits;

• Improved civic amenity
• Enhanced perception of the area
• Opposite brand new retail/hotel development
• Improved key touristic area
• Reduced fear of crime
